Zildjian

Avedis Zildjian I (the first) was an Armenian alchemist in the city of Constantinople in the seventeenth century. His attempts to create gold by combining base metals led instead to an alloy of copper, tin and traces of silver with unique sound qualities. Avedis used this discovery to create cymbals of spectacular clarity and power. The sound of the instruments was extraordinary, and as his reputation grew he was given the name “Zildjian”, an Armenian word meaning “son of cymbal maker.”

The Zildjian secret alloy is now nearly four centuries old. It has been passed down between Zildjian heirs for fourteen generations. Currently, Armand Zildjian’s two daughters, Craigie and Debbie are continuing the family tradition. Zildjian has been officially recognized as the oldest continually family-owned business in America.

The Zildjian brand stands for more than expertise and a rich heritage of high quality craftsmanship. Its essence is found in every thread of the drumming community, weaving together students, teachers, pros, old, young, and everyone in between.

From the beginning, the leaders of the company have stayed close to the working musicians in order to understand their experiences and needs. By sustaining these close bonds and looking to them for insight into the design and manufacturing of innovative and extraordinarily sounding cymbals, Zildjian has maintained its position as the world’s leading cymbal manufacturer.

Zildjian’s reputation for exceeding customer expectations and needs can be attributed to both its sharp focus on continuous quality improvement and innovation, and its emphasis on the family character and rich tradition of the business. Zildjian’s enduring values—leadership, commitment to quality and craftsmanship, passion for music and fun, music education, and a strong family heritage and culture—have guided the company in carrying out its vision over the years.

In praise of the Zildjian ANTI-VIBE Sticks
Wednesday, October 12, 2011 - 00:48

It’s no secret that Zildjian is and always has been the leader in cymbal innovation, but drumsticks too?

That’s right.  Many of the biggest names in drumming play Zildjian Drumsticks- Vinnie Colaiuta , Dennis Chambers, Travis Barker and Dave Grohl to name a few. Many of the signature models are unique in design, functionality and personality.

With the recent merger of Vic Firth and Zildjian Drumsticks , you can’t find a higher quality manufactured stick anywhere.  In the near future, PP is going to be focusing on Zildjian’s latest stick offerings, but we are going to start this entry with a testimonial about a unique Zildjian drumstick innovation: THE ANTI-VIBE STICK. Introduced originally in 2003 , it won top honors for drumstick innovation for reducing unwanted vibrations that can occur after the stick is struck. The picture above shows the ANTI-VIBRATION magic insert removed from cavity in butt end of the stick. It is a must have stick for E-Kit drummers

This unsolicited testimonial was sent to us from Brian Roberts. Brian is a professional drummer and drum expert and can be found giving advice and helping drummers at Boogie Music in Phoenix,AZ. He also tours with the Phoenix based band, "Sunset Strip".

Hey Mike, It’s Brian at Boogie Music.... Here's my story about the Zildjian Anti-Vibe Sticks I Started playing drums at the tender age of 6. It was a time where big drumsets, and of course, big hair was not only the fashion trend, it was the way of life. By 10, I had amassed a rather huge monster drum kit, you know, the usual, 2 bass drums, 4 toms, 2 floor toms, a gaggle of cymbals, and my trusty 2B sticks. I played for hours everyday, slamming the skins with those clubs! Well, fast forward to my late 20's.... I had developed carpal tunnel in both wrists, later attributed to using such heavy drumsticks, before I had really developed any real technique. I literally was in pain with every show, and by the end of the night, I was relying on makeshift ice packs from the left over ice in the beer coolers. In 2007, I was introduced to the Zildjian Anti-Vibe sticks (now a 5A model..lol) And almost instantly, my wrists were less fatigued, and I was feeling great at the end of shows. These sticks are now the reason I can still play 3-4 hour shows, and have saved me from attempting a risky surgery. My wrists are strengthening, and I feel better than ever! Thanks to Zildjian for such an innovative product, and allowing me to continue on my musical endeavors. Thanks Mike for introducing me to them,  You Rock!

Brian Roberts

Thanks Brian! The antivibe sticks have not only helped heavy hitters like Brian , they are a great in helping reduce the shock that can occur when playing E-Kits with mixed pads.

Gen16 AE Cymbals- In stores now!
Thursday, October 6, 2011 - 07:52

This changes everything!

The New line of products  from Zildjian’s Gen16 Intelligent Percussion division have hit select stores this week. Go in and try them out; this changes everything.

The beauty of these cymbals is the beauty in the cymbals. As a low volume acoustic cymbal that plays at 25-50% of the volume of a standard cymbal, this is a must-have addition to every drummer’s cymbal bag. The high end shimmer and clarity can’t be found anywhere else. The feel and control of the 20” ride cymbal is reminiscent of a flat ride and allows ride patterns to be distinct and articulate. And the look…. Game Over! With the beautiful, shiny nickel plating reflecting the cool blue lighting effect emitted from the Gen16 pickups, the AE cymbals may become a welcome  addition to your living room decor.

But these are more than just great sounding cymbals with an awesome appearance, these cymbals give you new creative power.  While being designed to improve the cymbal performance experience when added to E-Kits, these cymbals let you put on the head phones and experiment with a whole new palette of  sonic possibilities.

At a recent visit to Guitar Center Hollywood while on tour in LA with his Tennessee based band Burden, drummer Oliver Goodman exclaimed “ I will never play rubber cymbals again” after experiencing the GEN16 cymbals on an E-Kit for the very first time.

But this cymbal technology is just as much fun when you add them to a muted acoustic set in your home studio: instant drum booth! The power to change the EQ , filtering and reverb effects of your cymbals with the included DCP ( digital cymbal processor) is empowering. This new tool will inspire your performance. Put on a set of headphones and you can’t help but to get lost in the moment.

Come experience this new innovation at select Percussion Partner retailers and other professional music shops. NOW in stock for immediate delivery at these PP dealers: Rainbow Guitars, Milano Music, The Professional Drum Shop and Instrumental Music and Jim's Music Center

We will be talking AE Cymbals- techniques for use, technical support and your performance experience at a AE Cymbals discussion group on the Percussion Partners facebook page. Come join us.

Dave Grohl: A Rock Drummer’s Drummer
Sunday, September 4, 2011 - 23:14

Dave Grohl is the real deal and lives and loves Rock and Roll.  After winning BEST ROCK VIDEO  at a recent  MTV Video Music Awards with his band, FOO FIGHTERS, Dave said in his acceptance speech, "I just want to say: Never lose faith in real rock and roll music, you know what I mean? Never lose faith in that. You might have to look a little harder, but it's always going to be there."

What does passion for rock drumming look like?  Click here!

Grohl was the drummer and a integral member of Nirvana; the band that ushered alternative rock into the mainstream in 1991. While in recent years he has been best known as the front man and guitarist for the Grammy winning FOO FIGHTERS, he is still a drumming icon for those who love hard hitting drummers that play for the music, the song, and the band.  Dave has also lent his drumming talents to  other popular artists such as  Queens of the Stoneage, Probot, Tenacious D and Them Crooked Vultures.

As John Sorenson, Zildjian’s director of sales, planning and drumsticks stated,"Dave blends his own powerful technique with the styles of the influential drummers of the past to push the limits of music.  He truly embodies what it means to be a great drummer,"

It is only appropriate that the unveiling of Zildjian’s Dave Grohl Artist Series drumstick is scheduled to hit the stores in the next few weeks; just in time to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the release of Nirvana’s 1991 iconic Nevermind

The new Zildjian Dave Grohl stick is made from 100% US Hickory and is designed to be played hard and loud. Zildjian states that this exciting new model's larger dimensions, a length of 16 3/4” and diameter of 0.600”  are for extra power and reach as well as an acorn-shaped tip for sound clarity. This drumstick powerhouse features metallic, two-color artwork of Grohl’s famous tattoos as seen on both of his arms.
